  • Shepherd's Hand connects seniors with volunteers who help with errands, walking, and basic chores to ease isolation in Flathead County—nearly one in three residents is age 60 or older, and rising demand has created a waitlist for the service. The program offers a weekly routine that builds friendships and restores independence for older community members.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Food banks in the valley have seen record demand ahead of Thanksgiving as families seek help after the government shutdown and slower SNAP funds. Flathead Food Bank had 826 family sign-ups and North Valley served over 800 families with free meals while local groups and businesses donate food and money—this need is expected to continue through the holidays.  Flathead Beacon

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Crews at Whitefish Mountain Resort are finishing summer trail maintenance and installing new grooming equipment and a cell tower as they prepare for opening on Dec. 4 — tourism officials expect a strong winter season with a 6.8% rise in early season pass sales by Sept. 30. Kalispell tourism launched the Canadian Welcome Pass to help attract visitors amid a decline in cross-border travel.  Flathead Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Christmas tree permits are now available from Flathead National Forest for residents picking a tree this holiday season; permits can be bought at Forest offices or online. Fourth graders with an Every Kid Outdoors pass pay a $2.50 reservation fee — experts say cutting designated trees helps improve forest health and wildlife habitat.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The National Park Service announced that starting Jan. 1, international tourists will pay an extra $100 per visit plus a $250 annual pass at 11 national parks including Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Canyon—while U.S. residents maintain current fees and fee-free days.
