CULTURE NEWS

  • Montana officially observed Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a legal holiday for the first time on Monday—after state lawmakers and advocates worked for a decade to gain recognition. Governor Gianforte signed Senate Bill 224 in spring and supporters plan to celebrate with a community round dance at Peets Hill in Bozeman.  Flathead Beacon
  • Local illustrator Isaac Passwater fused his early love for horror, science fiction and fantasy into his work creating album covers and concert posters for bands like The Gray Goo. Born in Bigfork and now working full-time at a local company, he crafts distinctive art—drawing on influences from films like Tremors—to tell unique visual stories—melding rock culture with a taste for the bizarre—.  Flathead Beacon

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters will decide this fall on an $84.8 million bond to expand and update Columbia Falls High School so it can hold 1,000 students and have better safety features. Ballots will be mailed (Oct 17) and are due back on Nov 4.  Flathead Beacon

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wildlife officials confirmed that a virus called Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease—EHD—is causing deer and elk deaths in the Hot Springs and Mission Valley areas of Flathead Reservation. The CSKT Wildlife Management Program said recent frost should slow the biting midges, but some infected animals may die over the next week.  MontanaRightNow
