COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kalispell-based nonprofit A Ray of Hope received $50,000 from Spectrum Community Center Assist earlier this month—company officials and state Rep. Amy Regier marked the Sept. 13 event at Gateway Community Center, and the nonprofit will use the funds to expand job training and update technology with new laptops, a smartboard, and advanced gigabit internet service. This boost will help A Ray of Hope offer more workforce development classes to support community members in gaining crucial skills.  Daily Inter Lake

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ryan Ellis turned his family's recycling habit into a full-time business in Coram by operating trailers that collect aluminum cans at community sites along U.S. 2 (Gateway to Glacier Trails, Flathead River Alliance receive funds from the proceeds). ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sierra will open its new 23,000 square foot store at Mountain View Plaza in north Kalispell on September 27 with festivities starting at 8 a.m.—including music, giveaways and a hidden tag activity to win a gift card; the retailer will also donate $10,000 to A Ray of Hope to support its auto repair shop and Tires for a Change program.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Greater Valley Health Center is set to open a new 33,000-square-foot facility next month in south Kalispell—this expansion will add nine exam rooms to serve growing patient demand despite ongoing hiring challenges.   • A local family has permanently protected 52 acres of forested property west of Whitefish by partnering with the Flathead Land Trust — the conservation easement protects wildlife and bird habitats in the Tally Lake watershed near Star Meadows.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners approved the preliminary plat for the Steamboat Landing subdivision near Somers Middle School after taking public comment, yet Friends of Somers and trustee Joanne DeLong filed a lawsuit in district court claiming residents were not given a chance to speak before the vote (lawsuit). Developers plan to build 180 single-family homes and 72 condo units on the 64-acre site while neighbors express concerns about environmental safety and traffic.  Daily Inter Lake
