- ➤ Whitefish Community Foundation raised a record $6.6 million during its annual Great Fish Challenge that ended Sept. 12, with more than 4,000 donors supporting 85 nonprofits in Flathead Valley, and the awards ceremony will be held on Oct. 21 at Wachholz College Center in Kalispell—organizers expect the funds to support local programs for years. - ➤ Tex and Jerry’s Eatery opened in Hungry Horse this summer at 8942 U.S. 2 East to serve a limited late-night menu featuring a club sandwich and a Reuben—Chef Mike Scallen, who led the Columbia Bar kitchen, said the eatery will add Sunday brunch, sports promotions and live music on weekends to build its community vibe. - ➤ Flathead County Library has new fall programs for kids, teens, and adults, offering story times, STEAM activities, and a Wild Explorers workshop with local experts while teen events include Switch Days and popular programs returning every Wednesday. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montana Fish, Wildlife — and Parks confirmed that two bats captured at Libby Dam carry the fungus Pseudogymnoascus that causes white-nose syndrome, which disrupts bat hibernation and can lead to death. - ➤ After the killing of activist Charlie Kirk on Sept 10 in Utah, Mayor Mark Johnson condemned political violence on Monday and urged local candidates to speak freely for the upcoming election. The Kalispell City Council also approved projects to replace lead service lines and address contaminated wells—funded by state loans, grants, and bonds—to improve water safety and wastewater treatment. - ➤ Montana Department of Corrections is scheduled to open a 90-bed reentry center on Oct. 27 at the remodeled former Greenwood Inn and Suites in Evergreen to house male offenders.
