ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A grass fire broke out near Cobbler Village Terrace west of Kalispell on Sept. 3 and burned over 100 hay bales, two vehicles, two snowmobiles, and a wood splitter—more than 40 firefighters with mutual aid and two helicopters worked to contain the blaze while one person received minor treatment.  Daily Inter Lake

CRIME NEWS

  • Accused driver Jeffrey Scott Serio pleaded not guilty to a deliberate homicide charge in Flathead County District Court on Sept. 4 after he allegedly ran over and killed pedestrian Raymond Maurice Grigg on Aug. 19 near Glacier Park International Airport—officials report that the investigation continues.  Daily Inter Lake
  • A 38-year-old Columbia Falls man was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison and three years of supervised release for illegally possessing a firearm—after pleading guilty in March for being a prohibited person.  Flathead Beacon
  • A 40-year-old Idaho woman, Nicole Lynn Shain, who planned to sell methamphetamine and fentanyl on the Flathead Indian Reservation, was sentenced Wednesday to 11 years in prison followed by seven years of supervised release (by Judge Molloy), according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.  Flathead Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews battled the Marry Ann Fire—a five-acre wildfire—12 miles southeast of Marion in a box canyon with difficult terrain on Thursday, using three helicopters and two single engine air tankers while no evacuations were ordered and officials urged residents to avoid the area.  KPAX
  • Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is accepting donations of fruit at its Kalispell office at 490 N. Meridian Road from September 8th to 12th between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The donations aim to reduce bear attractants and support the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone—helping residents prevent conflicts with bears.  Daily Inter Lake

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bigfork Fire Department is asking voters to approve a mill levy and $15 million bond to fund a new fire station, update equipment, and increase firefighter wages. Some community members, including former board chair Dan Elwell, say the tax hikes are too high for taxpayers — voters must return ballots by 8 p.m. on Sept. 9.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Flathead County commissioners approved a $142 million budget for next year that will lower property taxes and invest in public safety and capital projects — including a new facility and improved recreation infrastructure. Commissioner Brad Abell explained that the tax relief resulted from revised tax laws and growth in the area.  KPAX
