COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Serious Juju, a nonprofit skate park at Gateway Community Center, will close on Sept. 6 if it does not raise $33,500 to cover operating costs—local families and supporters are working hard to raise the needed funds to keep this youth space open. The nonprofit has served over 10,000 kids since 2007 and depends on community donations to continue its mission.  Daily Inter Lake

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities recovered the body of David Easterly, 67, from Flathead Lake at about 2 p.m. on August 19 after he jumped from his boat near Blue Bay on August 16 — his death is under investigation with an autopsy scheduled at the Montana Medical Examiner’s Office.  Daily Inter Lake

CRIME NEWS

  • Flathead County deputies are investigating a fatal incident on Birch Grove Road on Thursday evening when a pedestrian was pinned beneath a vehicle and driver Jeffrey Serio was arrested at about 7:37 p.m.—first responders attempted CPR but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  KPAX

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alexander Ator, a veteran educator, was named the new superintendent for Somers Lakeside School District and he will work to rebuild public trust weakened by COVID-19, engaging stakeholders and staff—he signed a two-year contract with a salary of $120,000 and his role will begin this fall.  Flathead Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At the Western Caucus Policy Summit in Whitefish, FWP Director Christy Clark said Tuesday that Montana is ready to delist grizzly bears from federal protection as rising conflicts push for state management of high-density populations—her comments came during a panel discussion that also highlighted a broader call to adjust the Endangered Species Act.  Flathead Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Commissioner Jeff Burrows proposed changes—eliminating road setbacks in Mineral County, increasing the wolf quota from 334 to 458, and extending the wolf hunting season from June 30 to March 15 in several counties—for discussion at an 8:30 a.m. meeting today in Helena. Public comments have been mixed, with concerns raised about safety and the impact on wolf populations.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz reaffirmed plans on Aug. 19 to boost timber and energy production on federal lands during a speech at the Lodge on Whitefish Lake, saying local partnerships + easing regulations will support a 25% increase in timber output over the next four to five years and noting a Montana agreement that gives the state responsibility for managing 200,000 acres. He also said his team will move forward with efforts to repeal the Roadless Rule in the coming weeks.  Daily Inter Lake
