  • A man, Dale Justin Cartee, allegedly drew a handgun on two people on Columbia Meadows Drive on July 26—prosecutors charged him with two counts of assault with a weapon and set his arraignment for Aug. 7.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Kala Knaus pleaded not guilty to a Vehicular Homicide While Under the Influence charge in Flathead County District Court after a head-on crash on Highway 35 near Bigfork on New Year's Day killed Alyssa Sladek—her trial is set for March 9—.  KPAX

  • Local author Amber Townsley released her first children’s book, Discovering Dorris, this month as she shares a story of self-confidence and adventure born of Montana living. She will sign copies at Barnes and Noble Kalispell on August 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.—offering readers a personal connection with her creative journey.  KPAX

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A top state economist said Montana’s economy faced risks from uncertain tariffs that could slow growth through 2026—rising costs for building materials and vehicle parts may further hurt small businesses and the construction sector.   • Todd O'Hair, president and CEO of the Montana Chamber of Commerce, said that a serious discussion about a statewide sales tax is needed as Montana faces a decline in traditional industries and rising property taxes. He made his remarks at a mid-year economic update and called on business leaders + political figures to reconsider the state's tax structure as the economy shifts toward tourism and professional services.  Flathead Beacon

  • Grace Porges is a rising senior in marketing at the University of Montana and is interning at Flathead Lake Biological Station this summer—she helps promote the station's science by taking photos, collecting water samples, and designing graphics to share its work with the community.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Kalispell Public Schools Superintendent Matt Jensen’s contract has been extended for three years through June 30, 2028. The new contract sets his base salary at $187,398 and includes a 2% annual pay increase, a 2.11% cost of living adjustment beginning July 1, increased personal leave from 12 to 15 days, a vehicle allowance up to $3,960, and updated severance terms — starting at $5,000 for three years of service.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Flathead Electric Cooperative named rising sophomore Axel Rauscher from Glacier High School as youth director of its Roundup for Safety board — a non-voting role that evaluates nonprofit grant applications. HEALTH NEWS

  • Medicaid rules under H.R. 1—the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—may force patients to fill out tougher paperwork and meet new work rules that could cut coverage, especially in rural areas, as Western Montana Mental Health Center warns that many could lose help if they must jump through hoops. State officials will host a virtual meeting today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to outline these changes and address concerns.  Flathead Beacon

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new Sportsman’s Bridge Fishing Access Site, an 18-acre day-use facility with a concrete boat ramp and parking for vehicles and trailers, will open on Saturday, Aug. 2 near Bigfork on the west side of the Flathead River. The site replaces the permanently closed east access and meets rising recreation demand — construction for the new bridge begins next week.  KPAX
