CULTURE NEWS

  • Under the Big Sky music festival starts today near Whitefish at Big Mountain Ranch and runs through Sunday featuring country, folk, bluegrass and rock acts such as Red Clay Strays, Mumford and Sons and Tyler Childers. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Glacier Aviation Services began offering helicopter tours over Glacier National Park and nearby wilderness areas from its U.S. 2 location in West Glacier and may be in violation of Flathead County zoning rules — the Planning Office sent a warning letter on July 1 after residents complained. Owner Gary Kauffman said he believes his business is grandfathered in, but officials will seek voluntary compliance and may pursue legal action if there is no response within 30 days.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Amid pressure from ratepayers, the Lakeside County Water and Sewer District board tabled Tuesday a decision to postpone a planned sewer rate increase until its August meeting. The proposed change would set the monthly rate at $78.62 for standard users — with other users paying $109 — to fund improvements to the wastewater system and cover operating costs.  Daily Inter Lake
  • The Montana Legislature overrode Gov. Gianforte’s veto of a bill that uses $6 million to reimburse counties for holding state inmates waiting for mental health beds—67 representatives and 34 senators reached the two-thirds vote needed. Rep. Tracy Sharp said the move will help track costs before lawmakers look at more long-term solutions in 2027.  Flathead Beacon
