COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eighty-six Flathead Valley nonprofits will join Whitefish Community Foundation's Great Fish Community Challenge from Aug. 12 to Sept. 12, marking its largest participation in 11 years. The campaign will launch with a party at Glacier Bank Park at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12 and will offer a match on the first $25,000 raised by each nonprofit.  Daily Inter Lake

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday that a 58-year-old man, James Ventura Dominguez from Cheyenne, went missing after his specialized non-motorized row boat capsized on Flathead Lake near Rocky Point at 9 a.m.—search and rescue efforts continue despite high winds and rough water.  Daily Inter Lake

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montana Fish, Wildlife (FWP) confirmed that a non-native brown trout was caught in the Flathead River upstream of a fishing access site near Evergreen (which could harm native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout) and asked anglers to kill and report any such fish. FWP will use environmental DNA sampling along the river to help track the spread of brown trout.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flathead County approved an agreement with the state to run a new 90-bed prerelease center at 1150 E. Oregon St in Evergreen that will help offenders reintegrate into the community. The state hired Jim Sanderson as operations manager on Monday and will begin admitting residents in October, with county and state meeting every three months (to review recidivism rates, placement data, and community impact).  Daily Inter Lake

HEALTH NEWS

  • Donors, caregivers and hospital administrators broke ground on Tuesday on a new rural health clinic behind St. Joseph’s in Polson that will have 26 exam rooms—hosting seven primary care physicians, five behavioral health providers and four visiting specialists from Providence St. Patrick’s in Missoula. The project is part of a three phase plan to boost local healthcare by doubling access for up to 7,000 patients yearly while adding three new primary care providers soon.  Flathead Beacon
