COMMUNITY NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Prosecutors charged Kala R. Knaus, 31, with vehicular homicide for an alleged alcohol-fueled car crash near Bigfork on New Year's Day that killed a driver—she will appear in Flathead County District Court on July 10 and is in jail with bail set at $250,000.  Daily Inter Lake

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Glacier Park International Airport officials announced that early July 2026 will feature a rolling schedule closing the airport from Monday evening to Friday morning over four consecutive weeks to complete a critical rehabilitation of the main runway, which is needed to meet FAA standards. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers in Columbia Falls urged the school board to raise salaries because the current range of $42,621 to $80,518 falls behind offers from other districts as living costs rise. Negotiations will start in August and board members noted that new state funds (about $466,000 for elementary and $196,000 for high school) may help while budget limits remain (some teachers reported offers up to $9,000 more elsewhere).  Daily Inter Lake

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have issued a fish consumption advisory for all fish from the lower Clark Fork River due to tests revealing unsafe levels of PCBs, dioxins, and furans—this advisory also covers rainbow trout and northern pike from nearby rivers to protect vulnerable members such as pregnant women and young children. The advisory is indefinite until further notice.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Gianforte signed a law yesterday that cracks down on illegal hiring in Montana—this measure is meant to ensure employers follow state rules. Last weekend, a largely peaceful 'No Kings' protest in Kalispell led to five arrests and one injury, and a man convicted of murder in a Bigfork double homicide received a 100-year sentence.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell will begin a runway rehabilitation project in July 2026, marking its first major upgrade since 2009, airport director Rob Ratkowski said.
