Good morning, Kalispell. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 11th of June.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flathead County Commissioners appointed Marcia Stolfus as the new superintendent of schools on Tuesday, replacing former superintendent Cal Ketchum, and she will serve until December 31, 2026 — she has 18 years of special education experience as director of the Flathead County Special Education Cooperative.  Flathead Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting Friday, June 13, Glacier National Park will require timed entry reservations for the Going-to-the-Sun Road via the West Entrance and North Fork—from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.—though drivers arriving outside these hours may enter without one, and next-day reservations open on June 12 at 7 p.m. MDT on Recreation.gov.  KPAX
  • On May 28, Citizens for a Better Flathead and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes sued the state of Montana after DEQ approved a permit for a new sewage treatment plant that they say could let extra nutrients reach Flathead Lake — experts argue the permit failed to fully assess how waste might flow into Ashley Creek and the lake —. The lawsuit claims that poor groundwater modeling and rapid local growth increased the risk of further water pollution.  KPAX
  • On June 5th, wildlife officials euthanized a 4-year-old female black bear at Glacier National Park after it repeatedly sought food from vehicles and buildings. On June 7th, a female bear with a cub ate from an unattended backpack, causing the closure of Going-to-the-Sun Road — officials are now monitoring the pair to prevent further incidents.  KPAX
  • Energy Keepers forecast that Flathead Lake will drop to 2,890 feet by August, which is three feet below its full pool level of 2,983 feet — a historic low driven by warm, dry weather and low snowpack. Revised estimates show the lake falling from 2,891.9 feet mid-June to 2,891 feet by July 4 while public boat ramps remain accessible despite possible private dock restrictions.  Daily Inter Lake

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Julie Spencer, the longtime water and sewer manager for Bigfork Water and Sewer District, will retire at the end of June and be replaced by Assistant District Manager Tyler Hantz—who will lead public input on a recent rate study and manage work to upsize the west trunk sewer main.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Kalispell City Council approved a regional hazard mitigation plan at Monday night’s work session to open grant opportunities for hazard mitigation projects in 2025—city officials said the plan will help reduce long-term disaster risks while Mayor Mark Johnson argued it missed a chance for joint regional planning with neighboring towns.  Daily Inter Lake
