ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local watchdog group and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes sued state regulators for granting a permit that lets the Lakeside County Water and Sewer District discharge treated wastewater into groundwater near Flathead Lake. • Warm and dry weather and a fast spring runoff have kept the lake low, and Energy Keepers Inc. said it will reach 2,892.3 feet on June 19 before falling to 2,891.5 feet by July 12 this summer—officials say this may affect boat storage and dock access. The lake remains below its full pool of 2,893 feet due to these conditions.  Flathead Beacon
  • A landowner near Condon encountered a grizzly bear on June 3—he shot and killed the animal without injury—prompting the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks to advise residents and visitors to carry bear spray and secure attractants as bear populations grow.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bigfork Fire Department is asking voters to approve a 20-year bond for up to $15 million and a mill levy this fall to build a new fire station and upgrade current facilities—these measures will help fund staffing, equipment, and round-the-clock EMS services.
