  • Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Montana's population growth slowed after the COVID-19 boom—Kalispell added over 1,100 residents between 2023 and 2024 while East Helena and other cities saw smaller increases. These figures mark a slowdown compared to the pandemic surge, with migration continuing to drive growth.  Flathead Beacon

CRIME NEWS

  • A man involved in a 2024 standoff over loud music in Kalispell pleaded guilty after he threatened his girlfriend with a shotgun and was arrested by police, with Flathead County District Court handing him a one-year jail sentence—mostly suspended—and ordering a counseling assessment and $350 in fines.  Daily Inter Lake
  • On May 29, a 35-year-old man allegedly kicked vehicles near a city building in Columbia Falls after drinking at a downtown bar + he now faces a felony criminal mischief charge with $15,000 bail and an arraignment scheduled for June 19.  Daily Inter Lake

CULTURE NEWS

  • StoryCorps, in partnership with Montana Public Radio and Flathead Valley Community College, has set up a mobile recording booth in Kalispell that will operate through June 26. Residents can sign up for a 40-minute session to record personal stories—receiving a digital copy—with a public listening event scheduled on June 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wachholz College Center.  Daily Inter Lake

  • Kalispell remains Montana's fastest-growing city after adding over 1,100 residents from 2023 to 2024—while overall state growth slows and some cities see smaller gains or declines.  KPAX

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this year, EPA finalized the cleanup plan for the CFAC Superfund site and trustees with Montana’s Natural Resource Damage Program are asking for public comments on a draft proposal to recover damages from corporate polluters—public meeting to review the draft will be held Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m. at The Hub Downtown in Columbia Falls.  Flathead Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flathead County is moving forward with plans to build a new jail to ease overcrowding—land has been purchased and an architect is involved. Voters will see a bond measure this November—if approved, the new facility will be built on the south end of Kalispell.  MontanaRightNow
  • Ongoing road work involving chip sealing and pavement marking has closed Three Mile Drive and Center Street in Kalispell until June 15 — drivers are urged to take alternate routes while workers complete the improvements.  KPAX

HEALTH NEWS

  • Logan Health is managing a measles outbreak in Flathead County after a resident who traveled out of state contracted the virus and the county confirmed its second case last week. The health system formed a task force of over 30 healthcare professionals in March to contain the spread as tourism season approaches.  MontanaRightNow
