  • Jessica Torrion joined the new Cultivating Healing gardening group at Raven Ridge Farm to help cope with her grief after her husband's son took his life on June 8 by using nature as a healing tool—program specialist Rick Stern from Tamarack Grief Resource Center leads the sessions to help local residents manage loss while Torrion and her husband plan to volunteer again once his visa is approved.  Flathead Beacon
  • Last month, students at Whitefish High School hosted a dinner fundraiser that raised nearly $7,000 for two local families fighting cancer, with community members, teachers, and parents buying $50 tickets and joining a raffle. Cooking teacher Jason Sanders led the cooking students while 75 others planned the event—senior Maggie Mercer started the support club and hopes it will continue after she graduates.  Daily Inter Lake

  • Spencer & Co Steakhouse, a family-owned restaurant north of Kalispell, has served its signature steak and spaghetti dinner menu for 33 years—its homey dining room greets regulars by name. Owner Paula Davey said her husband Kent cuts Red Lodge beef in-house three times a week—upholding a simple, traditional menu that draws local guests each evening from 5 p.m.  Daily Inter Lake

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Glacier High School senior Abby Dose beat blood cancer with treatments and a bone marrow transplant and now plans to study pre-nursing at Montana State. She will graduate May 31 at 10 a.m. at the high school with about 300 fellow students.  Daily Inter Lake

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flathead National Forest approved a 20-year permit for new owners Eric Jacobsen and Thomas Knowles to operate Holland Lake Lodge south of Condon. They plan to preserve the historic lodge—without expanding it—as the Forest Service reviews Holland Peak LLC’s operating plan for 2025.  Daily Inter Lake
  • The Bigfork Fire Department board approved a bond initiative and mill levy that voters will decide on in September to fund a new fire district headquarters and upgrade aging fire stations—measures aimed at addressing staffing shortages and boosting firefighter wages, Fire Chief Jeremy Patton said.  Flathead Beacon
  • Federal funding cuts have led to layoffs at Rocky Mountain Labs in Hamilton and slowed research while local leaders and residents worry about the lab's impact on the local economy — city officials have already asked federal leaders for a consultation. The lab continues its building expansion even as researchers face uncertainty with contracts ending and some leaving amid the funding turmoil.  Flathead Beacon
