Today, the Bigfork Chamber of Commerce launched the Bear in Mind Business initiative to help local companies secure food waste and other attractants—experts say the program will lessen human-bear conflicts ahead of the busy summer.

Fourteen local businesses have already joined the campaign to offer tools, education, and safety guidelines for both visitors and employees.

Local tourism officials said economic uncertainty and border worries have slowed travel to the Flathead Valley as many visitors spend less.

Glacier National Park warned visitors that active black, grizzly, and brown bears have been seen across the park this spring and urged them to carry bear spray and hike in groups—official guidance also stresses staying away from dead animals, not approaching bears, and following the law by not feeding them.

Last week, Senate Bill 393 became law, providing $6 million over the next biennium for law enforcement on the Flathead Reservation, with the first $250,000 installments going to both Lake County and the tribes after rescinding a 2023 resolution.

Lake County officials and tribal leaders said the bill—carried by Polson Sen. Greg Hertz—will reduce costs and improve court capacity as they work on a memorandum of understanding.
