Good morning, Kalispell. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 17th of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • Jason Jerald Andreaus Meyer, 25, set his family’s home on Whitefish Stage Road ablaze in December 2023 after an argument—he later received a 10-year suspended sentence from Judge Dan Wilson on April 24 with credit for 126 days served and a restitution order of $27,442.35 following a guilty plea arranged in August 2024.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Kane Kelly Youngquist, 47, received a deferred sentence in Flathead County District Court after pleading no contest to felony criminal endangerment—he was charged with assaulting a downstairs tenant with a shovel following his March 25, 2024 arrest and struck a deal for a three-year deferred sentence with eight days credit for time served.  Daily Inter Lake

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flathead Valley Community College held its 57th commencement on May 16 at McClaren Hall at the Wachholz College Center, awarding 338 degrees and certificates to 314 students—graduates tossed their mortarboards and celebrated their achievements.  Daily Inter Lake

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Montana DEQ is inviting public comments on a proposed 81-year expansion of the Flathead County landfill covering 121 acres south of the current site on U.S. Highway 93 — the expansion will allow waste to be processed without transport outside the county. Comments will be accepted until June 15th, and the draft environmental assessment is available on the DEQ website.  MontanaRightNow
  • An early storm last month boosted the snowpack in northwest Montana, but NRCS said the Flathead River basin will have slightly below normal streamflows from May through July due to warm temperatures that accelerated snowmelt — hydrologists noted that peak flows have already passed and continued runoff will depend on upcoming cooler weather and additional precipitation — a trend that may affect water levels in the region.  Flathead Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalispell Councilor Sid Daoud announced he is running for mayor in the municipal election – this is his second bid after his 2021 run and he now faces fellow Councilor Ryan Hunter as his only opponent, with the election set for Nov. 4. Daoud, who was reelected to city council in 2023 after first joining in 2020, said he supports government doing only what is needed and using community-centered solutions.  Flathead Beacon
