  • Flathead Valley Exchange Club is hosting a free Kalispell Field of Honor event from May 23 to May 26 at Glacier High School where community members may dedicate one of 1,000 American Flags to a chosen hero — the opening ceremony on May 23 at 10:30 a.m. will feature guest speaker Matt Hegstad, a US Army combat vet — with net proceeds benefiting local veteran non-profit groups.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Seven community members were sworn in on May 12 as CASA/GAL volunteers who will serve abused and neglected children in the Flathead County foster care system. They earned certificates for 56 hours of training+ District Court Judge Dani Coffman administered the oath at the ceremony.  Daily Inter Lake

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kalispell man accused of drawing his handgun during a road rage fight near Woodland Park skatepark was arrested on May 1 and now faces a felony assault with a weapon charge in court (if convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine).  Daily Inter Lake
  • A 62-year-old Kalispell man allegedly fired two rounds from his .44 Magnum on his porch at about 9:53 p.m. on May 7 to slow a neighbor riding a dirt bike on Piney Dell Trail—Flathead County prosecutors have charged him with felony criminal endangerment.  Daily Inter Lake

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oliver remains Montana’s most popular baby boy name for babies born last year — Social Security data shows it held the No. 1 spot in four of the past five years. Lainey rose to the top for baby girls — replacing Charlotte and Olivia after a sharp increase in popularity.  Daily Inter Lake

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the 36th annual Family Forestry Expo held at Trumbull Creek Educational Forest, longtime outdoor educator Teresa Wenum celebrated decades of service by engaging nearly 1,400 students and local residents in forest education. Wenum—who retired from Flathead National Forest last week—plans to volunteer at future events while enjoying her retirement on the public lands she has long loved.  Daily Inter Lake

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spring Mack Days ended on Saturday, May 10 on Flathead Lake and set a new record with 60,138 lake trout entries—beating the previous mark of 40,362 from 2019. Kalispell anglers Kolton Turner with 2,320 and Jason Mahlen with 2,243 led the Top 20 while the event supported a conservation effort to reduce non-native lake trout and boost native species.  Daily Inter Lake
