  • The new Columbia Falls skate park opened on April 26 to high praise from local skaters; Otto Anderson and River Wolford said they enjoyed the park's mix of ramps and a deep bowl. The park was built by Dreamland Skate Parks + the city of Columbia Falls and funded by a $330,000 grant + local fundraising efforts, and it is free to all.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Local farmers markets in Missoula and Flathead Valley will start this weekend with new vendors, food trucks, plant starters and Irish dancers scheduled for Saturday, May 3. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities reported that intoxication is suspected in a head-on crash on U.S. 93 that killed Ronan man Devin Fryslie on April 25 at about 1 a.m. at mile marker 50—Fryslie was not wearing a seat belt and a Volkswagen Jetta driver was injured.  Daily Inter Lake

  • The Flathead Valley music community will gather on May 4 for a tribute concert honoring Karla West, a key music leader whose work enriched local arts at the O'Shaughnessy Center — the venue donated for this free event.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Glacier Art Museum will host its Benefit Gala and Art Auction on May 8 at Somers Mansion from 5—8 p.m. Forty invited artists will display paintings, drawings, and sculptures to help fund the museum’s educational programs — tickets cost $100 per person or $175 per duo and are available by advance purchase.  Daily Inter Lake

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flathead Valley Community College raised over $60,000 on April 3 at its annual Spring Festival of Flavors—money that will fund multiple scholarships for students next academic year. The funds will be awarded based on academic need, achievement, and personal circumstances.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Deer Park School in Columbia Falls will ask voters to approve a $4 million bond on May 6 to replace the failing Quonset Hut and office building—upgrades needed to improve space and safety for students and staff.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalispell City Council on Monday approved an intent to apply for a $25 million federal grant to redesign Main Street with a road diet that will reduce traffic lanes and add pedestrian safety features—this measure is part of a broader $27 million upgrade plan and requires a public hearing before submission.   • At Lake County jail in Polson, people in mental health crisis were held in a tiny 30-square-foot cell — where some waited for months for a bed at the state hospital and left markings on the metal door.
