COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kalispell will host an Arbor Day celebration at Lawrence Park on April 25th from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. where third-graders from Kalispell Public Schools and local volunteers will plant 30 trees and join environmental education booths+ park beautification efforts under the theme Plant a Cool Future.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Columbia Falls opened its first skatepark at Fenholt Park after years of planning, built with help from the BadRock SkatePark Association, the city and private donations including a $50,000 gift from Pearl Jam’s bassist. A grand opening party is set for Saturday, April 26 from noon to 5 p.m.—local skateboarders say the 12,000‐square‐foot park will bring riders of all ages together.  KPAX

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kalispell Chamber of Commerce is surveying local residents and business owners to see if tariffs are affecting their supplies, operations, or costs. The survey asks which products and materials are impacted and what changes are needed—information that will help the Chamber better support local business.  KPAX

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwest Montana students showed their musical skills at the two-day District Music Festival held by Flathead and Glacier high schools on April 11 and 12 — bands, orchestras and choirs from Flathead, Lincoln and Lake counties were judged on a scale from 1 to 5.  Daily Inter Lake
  • The Flathead restorative youth justice program won the Georgetown University 2024 Capstone Award and will be honored at the Janet Reno Forum in Washington, D.C. on April 24. The program helps over 300 Flathead Valley students avoid youth court by offering a restorative process instead of school exclusion.  Daily Inter Lake

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Montana Legislature passed House Bill 267 — known as Bobby’s Law — which strengthens DUI penalties by creating a new felony for drivers whose blood alcohol level exceeds .16 if a death occurs. The bill passed 95 to 3 and is expected to be signed by Gov. Gianforte to honor Bobby Dewbre, who died in March 2023.  KPAX
  • Flathead National Forest has extended the public comment period for the special use authorization application on Holland Lake Lodge until May 14—Eric Jacobsen and Thomas Knowles plan to operate the lodge using its current facilities. If the U.S. Forest Service accepts the application, an environmental analysis required by the National Environmental Policy Act will begin.  KPAX
