CRIME NEWS

  • The Montana Supreme Court denied a new trial for Bradley Jay Hillious—convicted in 2020 for killing his wife and sentenced to 100 years—after he claimed that jury selection errors and improper hearsay evidence violated his rights.  Flathead Beacon

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longtime Flathead educator Tina Blair—a former West Valley Middle School principal and Peterson Elementary teacher—will become the new superintendent of Fair-Mont-Egan next fall following Brandy Carlenzoli's retirement. Blair plans to continue key literacy and behavior programs while preparing the school for new state standards and maintaining its local, community-based focus.  Flathead Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flathead County Election Department will hold school elections and special elections for fire districts on May 6, with mail-in ballots sent on April 18 to active registered voters. The county will now manage tasks such as ordering supplies and counting ballots — a change meant to simplify voting and lower costs.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Montana lawmakers passed Senate Bill 224 to establish Indigenous Peoples Day and the bill now heads to Gov. Gianforte’s desk — marking a major step forward after 10 years of effort. The flexible holiday will let Montanans choose to celebrate either Indigenous Peoples Day or Columbus Day.  Flathead Beacon

  • Retired teacher Michael Donnay broke the vertical skiing record at Whitefish Mountain Resort by logging 10,347,920 feet from April 2 to April 6, surpassing Ken Jones’ previous mark with help from his wife Kerith and friends (nearly 2,000 miles skied).  Daily Inter Lake
