Good morning, Kalispell. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Federal cuts removed a grant from Humanities Montana on April 2 that funded Columbia Falls High School’s Democracy Project— a program that created safe spaces and taught civic lessons— and now the program may close next school year. Local arts groups fear that the cuts will also delay plans for community events like the First Peoples Festival scheduled for June. Daily Inter Lake
- ➤ Dan Struckman has written a memoir called How I Improved the United States Marine Corps: Stork's Story that tells of his childhood in Montana (with visits to Kalispell) and his time in the Marines. The book shares both funny and sad moments from his family life, school days, and military service that show how he grew into the man he is today. Montana Senior News
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Today, S&K Gaming broke ground on the 400 Horses Casino in West Polson—this 35,000-square-foot facility will create 75 jobs and support CSKT tribal programs—and the company plans an event center and hotel after expected completion in June 2026. MontanaRightNow
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Flathead National Forest is asking for public comments on a 20-year permit for the historic Holland Lake Lodge—potential buyers Eric Jacobsen and Thomas Knowles say they will not expand its current footprint. The U.S. Forest Service will review feedback until May 7 before issuing the permit. Daily Inter Lake
- ➤ Flathead County District Court Judge Dan Wilson announced on April 9 that he is running for a Montana Supreme Court seat to replace Justice Beth Baker and will follow a conservative judicial approach that applies the law as written. Wilson, who has served as a judge since 2017 and lost the 2024 race by about 8% to Katherine Bidegaray, once denied a state mask rule during the pandemic — a sign of his strict view on law. - ➤ Kalispell Planning Commission members on April 8 voiced concern that low public engagement in drafting a new land use plan left many residents unaware of changes linked to Senate Bill 382 — only 60 in-person responses and 110 website responses were received while additional events and a public hearing are planned for this summer. They also approved a new Montana Department of Transportation multi-use building in North Kalispell, with the project now under review by City Council. Daily Inter Lake
