- ➤ Kalispell law enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested five men from Mexico during a traffic stop that revealed they were in the U.S. illegally — they will be processed for removal. KPAX
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eighteen K-12 students from six schools in northwestern Montana won prizes in the Keep Montana Green art contest aimed at promoting wildfire prevention, according to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Northwestern Land Office. Winners from Creston, Plains, and Columbia Falls — including first, second, third, and honorable mentions — will advance to a statewide competition in April where top artists are set to receive ribbons, prizes, and calendar recognition. - ➤ Flathead Valley Tutor and Prep expanded its services by opening a new center on Third St. E. in Kalispell in January to help students and community members with homework help, test preparation and tutoring (one-on-one sessions start at 65 dollars per hour and group sessions are available). - ➤ Researchers at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks in Sanders County have been searching the dense forest for a missing newborn elk calf whose capture must occur within 72 hours—so they can attach a special collar and gather vital data—and they will use GPS collars, camera traps, and fecal samples to learn why elk harvest numbers have fallen since 2006. - ➤ Senate Joint Resolution 18 passed the Senate Natural Resources Committee on April 5, asking leaders to weigh Flathead Lake's recreation needs the same as hydropower, fish, and irrigation uses. Senate President Regier from Kalispell said the resolution was made to give locals a stronger voice—if approved it will move to the Senate floor and House committee—and experts say low snowpack and early glacial runoff may hurt lake levels.
