CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Derrick James Jackson testified Friday that he killed 65-year-old Stanley Grotberg in a Bigfork home after Grotberg fatally shot his mother in October 2022—Jackson pleaded not guilty to two counts of deliberate homicide—and the trial continues in Flathead County District Court. Daily Inter Lake
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Glacier National Park plow crews reached Crystal Point on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, but Avalanche Creek will be closed to hikers and bikers this weekend due to avalanche danger. Other park roads remain plowed but closed to vehicles (weather is expected to be sunny with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s) (staff continue monitoring evolving conditions). Daily Inter Lake
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On April 4th, the Montana Senate voted down Senate Bill 358— a measure to change water rules for some exempt wells used in development. Lawmakers voted 14—36 against the bill as they debated water supplies and environmental concerns. Flathead Beacon
- ➤ At an April 1 meeting, the Flathead County Board of Adjustments settled with the Montana Department of Corrections in a 3—0 vote with one abstention, ending a lawsuit over a prerelease center proposal rejected in October 2024 for traffic and location reasons. The settlement lets the DOC move forward with plans to open the county's first prerelease center. MontanaRightNow
