COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nate Chute Banked Slalom and Boardercross competition will be held on March 22 and 23 at Whitefish Mountain Resort + where snowboarders will raise funds for suicide prevention and mental health education in the Flathead Valley. The 26-year event will also include a fundraising auction at Blackstar Brewpub on March 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. + supporting local mental health programs.  KPAX

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Work began at the site of an Amazon distribution warehouse planned as a last-mile facility near Fred's Appliances on United Drive in south Kalispell. The 28,000-square-foot building is valued at $15.5 million and is the first development in a larger commercial-industrial area that will include road work and new homes, with no opening date yet.  Daily Inter Lake

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday evening in Kalispell, about 60 protesters held an empty chair town hall at Congressman Ryan Zinke’s office in Courthouse Park (organized by Flathead Democracy) as they used mannequins to ask questions about federal cuts and inaccessibility to lawmakers.  Daily Inter Lake
  • House Bill 12 passed the state House on March 19, funding two historic preservation projects in Kalispell to restore a historic Methodist church and the Train Depot Building in Depot Park. Lawmakers changed grant criteria to award smaller funds to more projects—local legislators criticized the new rules as unfair.  Flathead Beacon
  • Kalispell city officials began implementing the Montana Land Use Planning Act required by the 2023 Legislature to ease zoning rules and streamline administrative review. At a March 18 Chamber luncheon, Planning Services Director PJ Sorensen explained changes including allowing accessory dwelling units and reducing setbacks—steps that will lead to full plan approval by the city council by summer.  Flathead Beacon
  • The Whitefish City Council approved a contract for its viaduct improvement project on March 19 with a bid of $874,314 from a Bellingham construction firm that exceeded the $700,000 budget and will use funds from a $2.9 million street reserve. City officials said the project will start on March 31 and be mainly completed by June 20 (it will widen walkways, add lighting, and remove a slip lane for better pedestrian safety).  Flathead Beacon

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developer Mick Ruis has hosted potential businesses at the former Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. site and plans to develop commercial space and affordable homes on the 2,200 acres he bought from Glencore + he said companies behind AI server farms and manufacturing have shown interest while he prepares proposals for residential projects in the next few months. The city already has water mains nearby and will extend sewer lines to serve the new developments while Glencore retains the landfills undergoing a Superfund cleanup.  Daily Inter Lake
