ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Experts discuss aviation risks at Ryan Field near West Glacier after two fatal backcountry crashes last summer killed three, warning that challenging terrain & hot temperatures demand experienced pilot skill for safe takeoffs and landings.  Daily Inter Lake

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cayuse Prairie School's board of trustees voted Thursday to offer local instructional coach Christy Bortz the superintendent position with a proposed two-year contract ($93,500 annually). Pending final negotiations, she could replace retiring superintendent Amy Piazzola after providing her answer next week.  Flathead Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Flathead Avalanche Center warned of high avalanche risk after 2+ to 3+ feet of snow hit slopes above 5,000 feet Friday, including a near miss with a snowboarder near Whitefish Mountain Resort. Snow is forecast Friday while a front may cause flash freeze conditions on valley roads Saturday evening.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Glacier National Park will plug Montana's first oil well near Kintla Lake late this summer or early fall. The contractor will ferry supplies by helicopter and boat to cap the well, closing parts of the wilderness and motor campgrounds during work (campground closures apply).  Daily Inter Lake
  • The U.S. Forest Service approved a 7,700-acre timber project west of Hungry Horse Reservoir today. About 2,000 acres will receive mechanical treatments for commercial timber while 5,703 acres will see vegetation treatments including prescribed burning and restoration works — work expected to begin this summer.  Daily Inter Lake

  • Adam Naumann was named the new CEO of Greater Valley Health Center, bringing 15 years of experience to expand care — following Mary Sterhan’s retirement last fall — at the new facility on Third St. W.  Daily Inter Lake
  • Blackfeet Community College science instructor Dianna Arnoux-Whiteman received a $45,000 grant from Montana INBRE for a year-long study on long-COVID, beginning May 1, to assess lingering effects on the community using surveys and existing local health data.  Flathead Beacon
