  • A viral November photo spurred community members to rescue an emaciated dog spotted near Alberton between Frenchtown and Superior. Volunteers led by Bessie Spangler and the Williams family captured the pup — named Jack — which now receives emergency care as they plan its foster home.  Daily Inter Lake

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business owner Paul Roybal added a fire service line at Abbey Carpet & Floor on Main Street but new fire code changes left it unused, showing how tough it is for downtown property owners to tap into the water main. City engineers say horizontal drilling may not resolve the issues.  Flathead Beacon

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Evergreen School District superintendent Laurie Barron said growing mental health challenges left 93 students in therapy and 29 on waitlists since October. The district partners with Greater Valley Health Center and received a state grant to boost services for students.  Flathead Beacon
  • Fifteen top speech and debate students advanced at the West District qualifying tournament in Missoula on Feb. 13-14 and qualified for the national tournament in Richmond from June 14-19; local schools are now fundraising and selecting a World Schools Debate team to represent the district.  Daily Inter Lake

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Flathead Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for dangerous conditions in NW Montana mountains — heavy snowfall and blowing snow are overloading a weak snowpack and increasing the risk of avalanches. The warning covers Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead Ranges along with mountains near Glacier National Park.  MontanaRightNow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A University of Montana report released yesterday shows Flathead County led the state with an average of 3,078 rental listings and 12,233 monthly bookings as statewide short-term rentals grew 55% from 2019 to 2023.
